Equality FC is a ground-breaking campaign.
For the 2017/18 season, kicking off in August, Lewes Football Club will become the first pro or semi-pro club in the world to pay its women’s team the same as its men – both teams will have the same playing budget with no discrimination.
Lewes Football Club was founded in 1885 but in 2010 there was a REVOLUTION. The fans took over. Nicely, but they took over.
Lewes FC became a 100% supporter and community-owned club and re-dedicated itself to using the power of football to help its local community but also to change the world, just a little.
Lewes FC has been an innovator in football from introducing Football Therapy coaching sessions to help combat mental well-being issues to our ground-breaking matchday posters which have pioneered a new (and mostly funnier) way of advertising football matches.
But it’s football and the passion it generates that is the engine-room of our revolution.
Lewes FC Women play in the FA Women’s Premier League, alongside clubs such as QPR, West Ham, Crystal Palace and so on. This is the third tier of the national system, just below WSL 1 and 2. This makes our women’s team one of the top 30 teams in the country.
Lewes FC (men) play in the Isthmian League South. This is the eighth tier of the national system.
Both teams play a match a week plus two training sessions
Both teams are thoroughly professional in their training and outlook
Both teams already play at the same home ground The Dripping Pan (and unfortunately, this is a rarity in football)
So we think, BOTH teams should get the same resources. And they will…
History has left our club in the same situation as every other football club in the world, where no one had ever even questioned that the men’s playing budget dwarfed the women’s. So now we’re changing that history.
